What We Can Learn from Pottery Barn

Whether you shop at Pottery Barn or not, by studying their beautifully styled photos on their website and in their catalogs we can all learn a thing or two about styling our own homes. Here's what I mean:
If you have a large flat screen TV mounted on a wall you don't want that big black screen to dominate the room. Instead, treat it like a piece of art in a salon group. and surround the TV with other framed pieces of art.

Think in multiples. Two floor lamps will often look better than one and similar multiple framed artwork like these maps will make a powerful impact filling the entire wall behind the sofa.

Every room needs a touch of something organic. If you don't have plants or flowers, there are some great fakes out there...even bare branches, a bowl of stones or sea coral will do the trick.

Styling a bookcase seems easy until you try to do it...it's not! Study the beautiful styled bookcases at Pottery Barn for a lesson in scale, texture and shape.

Think pictures are only meant to be hung on wall? Check out these framed prints in the china cabinet and leaning on the top.

When hanging a group of photos and art, vary the shapes...break up all those rectangles with round and free-form shapes.

Thanks Pottery Barn!

  1. Great points! We are moving into a new house in a few weeks and it has some great opportunities for styling... built in shelves, etc., but I feel like I never know how to make it look good. I'll definitely have to use some magazines for inspiration -- thanks for the tip!
