August Flowers: Sunflowers

Welcome to Flowers on the First!

There's only about five weeks of summer left here in the Northeast.  We  might get a few "Indian summer" days in September, but by Labor Day the weather has changed-- there is a coolness in the air we haven't felt since May.

When I see the sunflowers out in full bloom I know that the time has come for summer to start winding down. I've been seeing sunflowers everywhere--in neighbor's gardens, garden centers, and local farmer markets.

I decided to put together a casual bouquet using sunflowers in an old metal pail.
I added some hosta leaves and sedem from my garden as well.

I've seen sunflowers growing in gardens...

and at my local farm stand.
How can you not look at Sunflowers and smile?
